College students are overworked, stressed and in much need of time with friends or family. As some will head home for some R&R, others may plan to take a quick trip to the beach with friends. If you are heading off this summer for some fun in the sun, follow these simple rules for keeping within your budget:
Go in groups — Hotels give better rates at a group discount so find a pack of friends and split the cost. Although this isn’t Europe, consider finding a hostel like motel or simply bunk with multiple room mates. You can get far more out of your vacation when sharing with friends, so why not share the expenses too?
Take a road trip — Instead of buying a plane ticket, load up the car and drive to your destination. The cost of gas and picnic lunches is a much more affordable vacation than expensive air fare and dining out. Plus, you can have your friends chip in on gas and lower your overall expense. If your destination is too far to drive comfortably in one day, chances are you can’t afford to take that vacation right now anyway.
Don’t use credit — Remember, cash is king. Rather than end up further into debt, only pay for what you can afford to cover in cash. Skip the souvenir line and munchies delivered on the beach, and pack a sandwich to go. If you are strapped for cash before you leave then pick up extra shifts at work in the weeks leading up to your trip.
Wait for later — There are some good deals to be found during off-peak times of the summer, such as towards the end. Many hotels are booked solid through June, so shop around for deals and specials that occur later in the summer. When calling around to different venues ask about last minute deals as well. Some places will knock 30% off the bill if you can get there this weekend.
