There are different types of federal loans and each type has different avenues for help that you need. So the distinctions are important.
First there are Direct Loans (DL). These are funded directly by the Department of Education. Second, there are federal family education loans (FFEL). These are only guaranteed by the Department of Education. However, since 2010 all loans are now Direct Loans. There are other types including Perkins Loans, Stafford Loans, and PLUS Loans.
